Problem/Research Statement: Within the United States, more than one third of the adults and seventeen percent of the children have obesity. Obesity is a disease in itself, which can lead to other problems. Some examples would be a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and bone and joint diseases.

Problem/Research Statement: Recently there has been a drastic increase in wildfires throughout the United States. This severe problem has cost about 1.1 billion dollars in damage and could go up to 2 billion by 2025. Many documents, memories and lives have been destroyed within the confines of burning houses.

Problem/Research Statement: Each year, infants, young children, and pets die from
being accidentally left in cars for an extended period of time. With ignition off, cars rapidly overheat, causing the cabin to become a fatal environment. The driver usually leaves a child or pet due to forgetfulness or ignorance of the danger.

ISTF Project Title: Eye Can See Now
Problem/Research Statement: Cataracts are a common and inevitable affliction among the elderly, and the current methods for treating cataracts in surgical removal. However, both are not very accessible, efficient, and sanitary for those living in underdeveloped countries. Therefore, an easier and more accessible method of treatment must be formulated to prevent blindness caused by cataracts in third world countries.

Problem/Research Statement: Researchers have found that there is a 67% excess of cortical cells, a type of brain cell that is common after birth and causes autism in children. This excess of cortical cells results in an increase in synapses between neurons.

ISTF Project Title: Walk on Water
Problem/Research Statement: In squatter settlements, lack of sewage and drainage causes unsanitary water to cover the ground, especially during rainy seasons. These pools can spread disease. This water often is wasted when it can be purified and used to help those who donít have access to clean and plentiful water.
