National Critical Technology Category: Energy
Technical Application: Power Electronics
ISTF Project Title: Proximity Electricity Controller
Problem/Research Statement: Approximately 30% of the total home energy use of an average person is used on lighting and other forms of electricity. By eliminating the idle consumption of electricity of lights, cooking and cleaning utilities, and entertainment appliances, we hope to not only cut electrical usage and spending, but also take a huge step in increasing the longevity of planet Earth.

National Critical Technology Category: Information & Communication
Technical Application: Health Systems and Services
ISTF Project Title: M.I.D. Chip
Problem/Research Statement: In 2010, 30,684 people with disabilities in the United States were classified as unidentified persons. These people needed help from government organizations but many of them were unable to communicate their problem because of a mental handicap. A nationally recognized identification system is needed to solve this problem and provide quick access to patient identity and medical records.

National Critical Technology Category: Living Systems
Technical Application: Medical Devices and Equipment
ISTF Project Title: A-NILE-ation
Problem/Research Statement: During time periods of overwhelming amounts of rain, such as during natural disasters, pools of water form. These are often breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitos. One common disease carried by these mosquitos is the West Nile Virus. Many cases do not show any symptoms, making it difficult to detect.
