In 2004, IEEE Educational Activities and the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida partnered to pilot test the Why Engineering Survey on a global membership.  IEEE engineering chapters from across the world were invited to participate. Responses were tallied on-line from mid-February though the end of March.  134 IEEE engineers participated.

Two new questions were added to the survey tool as a result of input from the first pilot survey that involved UCF College of Engineering and Computer Science Alumni and other local participants.  The first question was added to the Work Related Section and addressed "quality of life" issues as they relate to:

  • the impact of number of hours respondents worked per week,

  • the amount of local and out-of-town travel participating engineers experienced, and

  • the affect of learning about new technologies and processes on an engineer.

The second question was added to the Personal Advice Section and asked participating IEEE engineers what might be done to help them become involved in pre-college education activities.

It is important to note that the survey data obtained from respondents represents a very small percentage of IEEE engineering members and does not represent IEEE as a whole.
