In 2004, the Florida Engineering Society (FES) and the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida partnered to pilot test the ISTF "Why Engineering?" Survey in Florida.  Fifty-four (54) FES engineers responded on-line from June 4th though July 2nd.

The input from the IEEE Pilot Survey (conducted months earlier) incited the addition of many new questions to the survey tool.

The Pre-College Education Section included four new questions that asked participants if:

  1. any pre-college education activities encouraged them to pursue engineering as a profession,
  2. they were discouraged from becoming engineers,
  3. they had an opportunity to interact with a scientist or engineer in the classroom, and
  4. certain types of encouragement would have been helpful to support their interests in engineering.

The Post-Secondary Education Section involved two new questions.  The first asked if there came a point during participants' engineering education that they considered changing their major.  It further addressed why they considered a change and why they did not make a change.  The second new question asked if participants possessed necessary skills and/or experience to enter the engineering workplace at graduation.

The Work-Related (Employed) Section included three new questions.  The first question addressed job security, and the second question asked participants about other careers they would have pursued if they had not selected engineering.  The third question asked if the image of an engineer had changed and if so, to what degree.

The Personal Advice Section incorporated a new final question.  It asked participants who have been employed for five years or more, to offer advice to young engineers who have been recently employed in the engineering workplace.
