During the last quarter of 2004, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida partnered in the ISTF "Why Engineering?" Survey.  Four hundred and sixty -seven (467) ASME member engineers responded to the on-line survey from October 25th through November 24th.

There were no new questions added from the FES Pilot Survey (conducted months earlier).  A concern has been not to increase the number of questions because of the length of time the survey took to complete.  Due to the extensive input from the ASME members regarding questions that could/should be addressed, the Office of Special Programs at UCF/CECS, administrator of the survey, is again reviewing the addition of new survey questions .

On behalf of the University of Central Florida's College of Engineering and Computer Science, we wish to thank the Educational Office at ASME for their coordination, assistance and support throughout the survey.  And most importantly, our institution thanks the 467 ASME members who took time from their busy schedules to share their insights via their responses and comments.  These results are an important step towards better understanding decisions practicing engineers have made during the course of their careers.  Now we begin the process of exploring how this information may best be used to support young students who are contemplating a future in the engineering profession.
