The content of an elementary student team's final project website involves three major components.
Component One
|
Choosing a Problem and
Solution
|
Task
One
|
Describe a problem in your community and explain how it is related to what you are studying in school. Put
this information on your website. |
Task
Two
|
Pick a technical application from the National Critical Technology (NCT) list. Tell how your team thinks
this technical application could be used to fix the problem. Put this information on your website.
NOTE: Please see the Format
Guidelines for the additional design requirement related to this
task. |
Task
Three
|
Use the Internet to find another community that has the same problem your team chose. Name the community,
describe its problem and tell what it is doing to fix the problem. Put this information on your website. |
Task
Four
|
Describe at least three differences between your solution and the solution used by the community you found.
Put this information on your website. |
Component Two
|
Finding and Working with a Technical Advisor
|
Task
One
|
Your teacher should help your team locate a scientist or an engineer. This person will become your team's
technical advisor. He/she should know about the technical application you chose to solve your problem. Include
the following information on your website:
- who he/she is,
- where she/he works,
- what she/he does on the job,
- how long she/he has been doing this kind of work, and
- why she/he decided to become a scientist or engineer.
|
Task
Two
|
Ask your technical advisor to review what you have written in Component One. Tell how your technical
advisor helped your team to better understand the problem. Include any suggestions your technical advisor
offered about your team's solution to the problem. Put this information on your website. |
Task
Three
|
If your technical advisor is an engineer, ask him/her about working with scientists. If your technical
advisor is a scientist, ask him/her about working with engineers. Explain the difference between what a
scientist and engineer do and why you think it is important for scientists and engineers to work together. Put
this information on your website. |
Component Three
|
Evaluating the Solution |
Task
One
|
With the help of your teacher and/or technical advisor, identify another scientist or engineer who is familiar
with the technical application your team selected. Explain who he/she is, where he/she works and what he/she does for
a living. |
Task
Two
|
With the help of your teacher, send this person a detailed e-mail that describes the problem you are working on
and the technical application your team thinks would solve the problem. Ask the person you contact to give you his or
her opinion about your solution. On your website, please include the e-mail your team sent and the e-mail your team
received from the person you contacted. |
Task
Three
|
Based on what you have learned, explain why your problem is
important to society as a whole and how your solution might change
people's lives or the environment in which they live? |
